It was a great workshop and I wish I had time to follow up now rather than to wait till exams etc all over at college. I am not so keen to html as i know that I cannot see the mistakes so i am thinking of looking at swish. Am doing a Phd through the Knowledge Lab, London in Digital fiction and stuff...

Strayfish, that's exactly the discussion that's been going on in my office since this CFP came through. Everyone's reaction was "I don't do anything transgressive." And essentially, that's our whole argument for the panel we're proposing: there is no such thing as transgression in art and literature.

Interesting. Transgression for me would mean an abuse of reasonable rules, not the flexing of rules that require experimental confrontation. That said, the whole purpose of creative thinking would seem to be an up-turning of the expected so that process of disorientation and re-calibration have a chance to start something new. Hm!

Thanks for that. The ELD has evolved much since my initial post, and I've since learned that it is indeed involved in archiving electronic literature with the Library of Congress.

In addition, the ELD agrees with your notion of creating networked media - if you explore the current version, you'll find architecture in place, particularly in the tagging system, to link concepts, ideas, criticism with artwork, and so forth.

Hello, just stumbled across your blog via reading about the Transliteracy Conference you'll be speaking about in February. I've been looking at similar issues, and the following quotes caught my eye:
"My one concern about the ELD - about any collection of e-lit, really - is that they are not libraries. To keep with the library analogy, the ELD is a card catalogue. It contains information about the works, and points to their locations, but it does not collect and preserve them in any real sense."

"The problem with e-lit at the moment is that it is ALL impermanent, not just some of it. ALL of it."

Have you considered the emerging Linked Data/Semantic Web technologies such as RDF, which seek to use URLs to link concepts and ideas together, rather than just documents? The notion of permanence is pretty important there as well...

I'm thinking that a truly web form of media would take the form of a web of URLs and links, rather than just distributing text/images or video/audio via the web.

I don't know Mike, I'm female and that's what I want to do: live off the land, build my own home, etc. I'm still trying to figure out where in America I can do this and how in the world I would fund it. (Maybe I can find a corporate sponsor... OR!!! a reality show.. I could train a dog to deliver my footage...) My daydreams consist of getting lost in the woods or washed up on a very large, very supportive, very uninhabited island. *sigh*... if only!

thank you thank you thank you!!! I was laughing so hard hubby came running from the other room thinking i was sobbing. I followed you from an indie bride link and I think i love you.

The funny part is, it is all almost done - we planned it all in about a month. The vows, the ceremony, and the table decor are the last steps then (dare I say it) I think we're done. Finally.

I cannot imagine what would have happened if I didn't decide to get married within 4 months of getting engaged. The men in white coats would be taking me away...

I'm also sure I've never read anything like Drowning Jonathan before.
It's what you do with the idea that matters. So what if the story you had in your head is already out there? I bet by the time you get it down on paper, it turns out to be a different beast altogether anyway.
You're right that the same idea is made original because of the approach and the experiences of the writer. For example, the writers that have already written your ideas might employ a character that eats nothing but tomato soup. You, however, might take a different approach...

By the way, I liked Drowning Jonathan very much.
